How To Grow Pea Microgreens

Pea Shoot Microgreens

Pea Shoot Microgreens are the second most popular microgreens, right after sunflower microgreens, and they are by far the easiest microgreens to grow. If you want to get into growing microgreens you should start with Pea Shoots.

Let's start growing

Pea seeds are quite large in size as compared to other microgreens. The process to get a nice and tasty batch is as follows:

1. Add the Pea Seeds to a glass or a container and then add water to soak the seeds for 24 hours.

2. Prepare a container with medium (for beginners, medium is basically where you will grow your seeds, let's say the 'soil'). The most popular and recommended medium is coconut coir. The coconut coir is free of pests and bugs and also retains moisture and water very well.

You can use a 10 x 20 (cm) container to grow the Pea Microgreens however, for the first time you can use a smaller container, for instance, any small tray you get with your vegetables at the supermarket. One of those small mushrooms containers would work.

3. Premoist in the growing medium to avoid any expansion or contraction after planting.

5. After 24 hours the seeds are well hydrated, so add the seeds on top of the growing medium spread the seeds evenly with hands throughout the container.

6. At this point you can either add more growing medium on top of the seeds to cover and blackout the seeds or you can use another plastic container on top of the seeds to blackout the seeds as well.

7. Recommendation: cover the Pea seeds with growing medium and then flatten out the surface with a piece of wood.

8. Covering the seeds with growing medium works really well; however, this is not the best practice with other microgreens. Some seeds is better to blackout another container on top.

After planting, water the container one more time. After two days the pea seeds will start to develop shoots.

9. Keep watering every day with a spray bottle. After two days shoots are about  2.5cm tall and the container is evenly growing and there is absolutely no mold destroying medium.

The shoots should look very healthy all because of the coconut coir retains the moisture and absorbs any extra water which prevents mold from growing.

10. Place the container near an airflow or a draught from AC or heat vent. Proper airflow prevents mold from growing as well.

11. Harvest the beautiful shoots with scissors or a knife. Take about 10cm of shoots and harvesting.
