Bourette Silk Yarn
Bourette silk yarn differs significantly from traditional mulberry silk in both appearance and properties. It has a matte finish and a slightly irregular texture, with small inclusions and a gentle fuzz. At first glance, bourette silk may seem rustic, resembling linen or cotton. However, it is a pleasure to knit and wear — exceptionally soft and gentle to the touch. The small knots and inclusions do not irritate the skin; they are smooth and silky, and the yarn itself is strong and durable.
Bourette silk is spun from the inner part of the silkworm cocoon that remains after the long filaments used for classic mulberry silk have been removed. These shorter fibers contain a higher amount of sericin — the natural silk protein often referred to as “silk gum”. Because the yarn is spun from short fibers, bourette silk has a distinctive textured and slightly nubby character.
Sericin has natural antibacterial properties, provides anti-inflammatory benefits, soothes the skin, and allows the fabric to breathe well. It does have a specific natural scent, which gradually disappears after washing and wearing.
Bourette silk is truly a versatile, all-season yarn — warm in winter and pleasantly cooling on hot summer days. It also offers natural UV protection and absorbs moisture up to five times faster than cotton. In the past, lightweight and hygroscopic natural silk was used as filling for luxury pillows and duvets because of its ability to retain and quickly recover its shape.
Bourette silk does not require frequent washing, as it naturally freshens when aired outdoors and does not retain unpleasant odors.
