How to Properly Handle Fine Yarn on Spools

How to Properly Handle Fine Yarn on Spools

This guide is for those who plan to knit with fine yarn on spools (cones), especially yarns that require washing and finishing.

Always Knit a Swatch First

Before starting your project, knit a 20 × 20 cm swatch.

1. Measure it or count the stitches and rows.
2. Wash and dry it.
3. Measure again to determine the final gauge and yarn yield.

Fine yarns often change after washing. Some may require three or even four washes to reach maximum softness and full fiber bloom.

High-quality fibers such as cashmere, camel, yak, and similar fine wools should be knitted with slightly looser stitches. These fibers tend to expand and bloom after washing.

Washing Options

You can wash knitted samples (or finished garments) either in a washing machine or by hand.

Washing Machine

* Place the sample in a mesh laundry bag for delicates.
* Select a wool cycle, 30–40°C.
* Set the spin speed to the lowest setting.
* For the first wash, use a felting detergent or a detergent designed for delicate wool and cashmere.

Note: When using delicate detergents, several washes may be required for the fibers to fully open and soften.

Hand Wash

* Use approximately 15 ml of detergent per 5 liters of water.
* Soak the sample for 1–2 hours, depending on the detergent used.
* Rinse thoroughly in clean water.

For subsequent washes, you may use a fabric softener suitable for fine fibers.

Drying

* Do not wring or twist the item.
* Remove excess water by placing it between two towels and rolling gently.
* Always dry flat on a horizontal surface.
* Never hang the garment, as the weight may distort its shape.
* Do not dry near direct heat sources.

Iron only with steam.

Pre-Treating Yarn Before Knitting

If desired, you may pre-wash the yarn before knitting.

* Wind into skeins weighing no more than 100 g each.
* Secure skeins carefully to prevent tangling.
* Follow the same washing procedure described above.
* Always test on a small sample first.

Key Rules for Fine Yarns on Cones

* Use only detergents designed for delicate fabrics, wool, or cashmere.
* Avoid squeezing, wringing, or twisting.
* Dry strictly flat and reshape while damp.
* Keep away from heat sources during drying.
* Steam only when ironing.

Proper handling ensures accurate gauge, maximum softness, and long-lasting quality of your finished garment.
